Priyanka Chopra’s Baywatch sinks at the US box office

Priyanka Chopra’s Hollywood debut film, Baywatch, which released in USA on the 25th of May has failed to stay afloat at the US box office. The film garnered reviews ranging from below average to terrible, with the lousy writing failing to impress the critics. The film managed to earn a meagre $18.1 million over its first weekend, with its projected collection estimated to be around $26.6 million by the end of 29th May i.e. Memorial Day which is a federal holiday across the US.

The above collections are a major downer considering the budget of the movie which is estimated to be around $60-70 million. The producers of the film believe the bad reviews negatively impacted the film,“I think we got pretty stung by reviews,” said Paramount’s distribution chief Megan Colligan, referring to the film’s current 19% on Rotten Tomatoes. But the makers are positive that the film will be well received in other parts of the world, as they plan to promote it heavily abroad and they are hopeful that the international numbers will help them with the overall box office figure.

Baywatch is an American action comedy film based on a television series of the same name. This series was about a team of attractive lifeguards who patrol a crowded recreational beach. Now, this particular movie shows lifeguard Mitch (Dwayne Johnson) and a flamboyant new recruit (Zac Efron), who are a mismatch and at loggerheads forever. But both of them have to put their differences aside and work together to stop a criminal mastermind’s drug trafficking operation, that threatens the future of the bay. And Priyanka Chopra plays the criminal mastermind disguised as a club owner.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge was Baywatch’s competitor at the US box office and managed to race ahead of it.

With the film slated for a June 2 release in India, let us wait and watch what the Indian reception to Baywatch is going to be like!
