Padmavati Panel: Sanjay Leela Bhansali to discuss the movie

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the director of the controversial movie Padmavati has been summoned before a Parliamentary committee comprising of 30 members. He’ll be discussing the content of the movie and the accusations made against it, about the distortion of history relating to the Rani Padmavati of Chittor. The movie has become a subject of debate and protests, chief among which is a fringe group, Karni Sena, that has seriously objected to the content of the movie, specifically, the Ghoomar song, in which Deepika Padukone, who plays Padmavati is portrayed as dancing and showing her midriff. The Karni Sena members have said that they won’t let the movie be released because it hurts Rajputi Sentiments. It should be noted that none of them have watched the movie yet.

Padmavati has been banned in five states in India, but the Supreme Court on Tuesday, while dismissing another petition to stop the release of the movie outside of India, advised the Chief Ministers to refrain from commenting on the movie as it will create a prejudice against it. It also said that the authority to certify and clear the movie rests only with CBFC.

The Panel will be chaired by Anurag Thakur and will also be hearing from CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi and officials from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The meeting is scheduled to held at 3 PM. Among the questions, it is rumored that the panel will also be sharing opinions about movies based on historic figures and the extent to which a director or creator can be allowed to go to make his/her vision possible without hurting the sentiments of religious groups.
