Padmaavat won’t be banned in Himachal Pradesh, says Chief Minister

Padmaavat, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh won’t be banned in Himachal Pradesh. Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said on Saturday that his government will not stop the release of the movie. He said, “There will be no ban on the movie. Neither I nor any of my colleague have opined to ban this film.” This will come as a relief to the makers of the controversial movie, as it has already been banned in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. There had been some reports that suggested a ban in Himachal Pradesh too, as Jai Ram Thakur had told the media, “I don’t want to say anything else on the matter. We will think what we can do. The film is indeed controversial. I respect art but when it comes to people’s sentiments being hurt, it must be thought about and discussed.”

Padmaavat, which had previously called Padmavati, had gotten clearance certificate from the CBFC on 6 January 2018, after the makers had made the desired changes to the film. But the fringe group, Karni Sena has still warned that they will not allow the film to be released and will be holding bharat bandh on the day of the release, 25 January, 2018.

The fringe group has been protesting against the movie because of alleged distortions of history related to Rani Padmini of Chittor, even as Sanjay Leela Bhansali has refused that the movie maligns the image of Padmini. The name of the movie was changed because of suggestions from the CBFC board, and because the movie is based on the poem by sufi poet Jayansi, Padmaavat. Recently, the women of the Kshatriya group in Rajasthan have warned that they will commit Jauhar, that is self immolation, if the movie is released.
