Film maker Anand L Rai (Colour Yellow Productions) has extended his support and teamed up with producer Manish Mundra (Drishyam Films) to make sure the upcoming political dark comedy titled Newton starring Rajkummar Rao in the lead, gets the appropriate release platform it rightfully deserves. The film is scheduled to release on August 18 this year.
Indian indie films often touch topics that mainstream hindi cinema shies away from because of the lack of commercial viability of such films. It takes a lot of courage to make and present such projects and Newton is one such film. This movie unfolds on election day and is about a government clerk (election officer), who is a novice in the field and is deployed on duty on election day, in a dispute- ridden naxalite area in Chhattisgarh. Newton Kumar (Rajkkumar Rao) tries his best to discharge his duties and conduct free and fair voting despite the threat from naxalites who do not want the locals to vote and also the police forces who think the election is a sham and don’t wish to risk their lives by providing security at the polling booth.
This political comedy has satirical tones to it but aims at keeping the audience chuckling throughout. Do not be fooled by the seriousness of the subject, as the makers have dealt with the film by lacing the plot with comedy that is actually thought provoking. The film has been directed and written by Amit Masurkar.
Newton had its world premiere at the prestigious 67th Berlin International Film Festival this year, where it was highly appreciated and also won the CICAE award for Best Film in the Forum section.
Rajkummar Rao, the film’s lead actor who believes in continuously pushing the envelope with his career choices, adds another feather to his cap by choosing to do this fierce political comedy film which is extremely relevant but wrapped in the form of entertainment.
