The MET Gala 2017: The best dressed list

The MET Gala also known as the MET Ball is the annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute ( i.e. the fashion department) in New York City. This is possibly the biggest and the grandest fashion event of the year. Anna Wintour, the editor of American Vogue and the artistic director of Condè Nast is the chairman of the gala and she oversees every detail of the event that sees a mix of big names in the field of fashion, films, politics and business. The MET gala blends philanthropy with fashion and power.

Each year the guests are expected to dress according to the theme of the gala which is also the theme of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition. The event includes a cocktail hour and a formal dinner.

This year’s exhibition was dedicated to 74 year old Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, who founded her label, Comme des Garçons in 1969. She is among fashion’s most treasured, imaginative and inspirational visionaries. Considered to be a fashion rule- breaker throughout her career, she defied the fashion industry norms and carved her own career. The theme this year was “Rei Kawakubo/ Comme des Garçons: Art of the In- Between’ which explored 150 examples of Kawakubo’s work.

This year the tickets were priced at $ 30,000 a piece and tables were for about $ 275,000. The party and exhibition are sponsored so all the money from ticket sales goes to the Costume Institute.
