Mersal has now become one of the highest grossing movies of the year, with an impressive collection of 200 crore, and despite the controversies plaguing the movie, it has done expectionally well in the overseas market. Mersal is action star Vijay’s 61st movie and seems to have struck a cord with the audiences, who have responded to the strong reviews and ignored the pleas of other people to boycott it. There have been rumors that the figures have been inflated and aren’t that high, but for now now confirmation has been made to justify any sources.
Mersal was released on Diwali, and had been part of the controversy, as its release had been delayed because of the theater owner’s strike in Tamil Nadu. After its release, the movie was targeted for trying to smear the Indian system and its political communities and organizations. A case was filed against it in the high court, until it was dismissed by the judges on the grounds of “Freedom of Speech”.
The delays and controversies seem to have helped pique the interest of the audiences who thought that to watch, only if to see what was so wrong about the movie. The strong word of mouth also helped in attracting people to the theaters.
Mersal also became the third highest grossing Indian movie in Malaysia, behind Dilwale and Kaabil.
