Lipstick Under My Burkha Reboot Trailer Out To Admiration On Twitter

Lipstick Under My Burkha second trailer for perhaps the most controversial film of the year is out, and twitter is abuzz with praise and anticipation. Movie stars Konkona Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak Shah, Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur and Vikrant Massey. The Prakash Jha film is directed by Alankrita Srivastava and is perhaps the most feminist film in a long time. It portrays subplots of four different women whose ambitions do not quite fit the contexts they find themselves stuck in. Ratna Pathak plays a woman who struggles and comes to terms with her sexuality as a middle aged woman while Konkona Sharma, appearing in yet another woman-centric plot, plays the troubled housewife and mother of two children. Kumra similarly plays a small town woman who is too dominant for the men around her and Borthakur a college-going girl who dares to be pop star in an environment so closed that even lipstick is frowned upon. Through the common narrative of rebellion under the strictly patriarchal setup of the society, though each women being caught in a hell of their own, the movie has the ambitious goal of bringing to fore the little ways in which women are breaking the glass ceiling.

The film also came under the limelight when it was rejected by the Prakash Nihlani-led CBFC, on grounds of the film being ‘lady-oriented’ and containing explicit scenes and language. The naked display of sexism by the often controversial Censor Board had made headlines, and attracted support for the film by the industry. The film was granted ‘A certificate’ last month after the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) overruled Censor Board’s decision to reject the film.

The film will releases on 21 July 2017.
