Ittefaq movie review: A new twist on an old story

Ittefaq stars Sidharth Malhotra, Sonakshi Sinha and Akshaye Khanna and is directed by Abhay Chopra. The movie concerns Vikarm (Sidharth Malhotra), an acclaimed writer who is suspected of murdering his own wife Katharine Sethi and a lawyer. Another suspect, and a witness in the case is Maya (Sonakshi Sinha), who may or may not be telling the truth about what happened the night when she let Vikarm inside her house. Akshaye Khanna plays the detective who is investigating the case. Ittefaq is an apparent remake of the movie of the same name that was released in 1969, but a few changes and updates have been done to the modern iteration.

As you must’ve seen on various social media, the team behind Ittefaq has asked everyone to not reveal the twists and the turns that occur in the movie. But all we can say is that some of them are clever, while others are dumb and ridiculous. And it doesn’t ruin the movie anyway, because it is endlessly entertaining and will hook you until the final revelations.

Sonakshi Sinha and Akshaye Khanna are very good in their respective roles, even though Sonakshi seems to get hampered by playing so many version of the story and relies on too many of her same tricks. Sidharth Malhotra, however, is servicable. It can be said that the movie should’ve cast someone else in the role of Vikram because Sidharth’s limited range as an actor doesn’t help him get into the character and it makes it look shallow. Sidharth does a lot of empty stares in this movie, but that doesn’t equate to good acting. Sonaskhi, however, is very good in her dramatic scenes.

The movie is directed with style by Abhay Chopra and is a different type of cinema than most people think. For that reason, Iteffaq is worth checking out.
