Box office report: Kaalakaandi, Mukkabaaz and 1921, all performed below expectations

Box office report: Kaalakaandi, Mukkabaaz and 1921, all performed below expectations

Saif Ali Khan starrer Kaalakaandi has opened way below expectation on the Friday. Distributors were expecting that with Saif headlining the film, it will open somewhere between 3-4 crores but film only took an opening of around 1 crore, which is disastrous. Saif’s last film Chef had opened to the exact same number and the film tanked bad at the box office despite of favorable reviews and Kaalakaandi lacks there as well. Film is a low budget and was promoted only to an extent but this kind of opening will be intolerable for the producers. Saif’s disastrous collection is making the way out of his days when he played lead roles in the film and could bank roll a film just by his presence in it.

Anurag Kashyap’s Mukkabaaz was expected to open at around 1 crore but did lesser than that and got stuck around 80 lacs. Mukkabaaz is very limited release but got the maximum amount of press in consideration with Kaalakaandi and 1921. Mukkabaaz by nature is a film that should work in both single screens and multiplexes. Despite of the fact that Anurag’s last two films, Bombay Velvet and Raman Raghav 2.0 tanked phenomenally on the box office, one would hope for better collections as reviews have been outstanding for this film.

Vineet Singh is playing the lead for the first time in a life as he has done supporting roles in Gangs of Wasseypur series and Ugly. There is clearly no hype around Vineet Singh because he does not come from a film family whatsoever but his performance in the film has been extraordinary. Leading the pack this week was Zarin Khan starrer 1921, which did the business of 1.26 crores on the box office despite of not being released in certain multiplexes due to some distribution issue. Recall value of 1920 has totally worked for 1921 and gott he audience in the theaters though word of mouth around the film is bad.
