IIT Kanpur suspends 22 students today of B.Tech second-year for the ragging of freshers. This decision was taken on Monday night on 9th October. Sixteen students were suspended for three years, and six students were suspended for a year. They can resume their studies only after their suspension period of 1 and 3 years. About 30 freshers did complain to the management that some senior students of B tech Second-year took ragging in campus Hall number-2 on the night of 19 and 20th August. during ragging, they forced them to do some obscene and objectionable and also who refused to oblige were thrashed by seniors.
Students who joined the institute in July filed a mass complaint in August against their seniors. Juniors told that they were forced to strip by seniors. The anti-ragging committee conducted the inquiry against that 22 students and submitted their report on September 21. The committee found the charges to be true and decided to punish them. The committee took decision along with the presence of Director Professor Indranil Manna and Deputy Director Professor Manindra Aggarwal.
Whereas the IIT Kanpur management did not initiate any legal action against and not lodged any FIRs against these 22 students and said that it will ruin their careers and also expose their identity.This strict action decision of suspension taken today by IIT Kanpur would send a strong message to students to say no to ragging and maintain decorum.
